History of Dakhla

Dakhla, once known as Villa Cisneros after the Spanish trading post founded at the end of the 19th century, is a peninsula of sand and rock tucked between the Atlantic and the desert, at the far south of Morocco. Isolated between ocean and dunes, the town long lived to the rhythm of fishing: the colourful boats of its harbour, and sardines and langoustines shipped around the world, remain a source of pride today.

Dakhla lagoon, some forty kilometres long, is a natural jewel: shallow turquoise waters sheltered by a sand-spit barrier, where flamingos and migratory birds come to feed. The wind blows almost all year round, making the peninsula one of the world’s best destinations for kitesurfing and wingfoiling.

Beyond the sea, Dakhla offers striking landscapes: the hot spring that winds through the desert, the cliffs of Dragon Island, and white sand dunes that plunge into the ocean. A former caravan stop between the Sahara and the coast, the town keeps a peaceful atmosphere, blending Saharan heritage, fishing traditions and the hospitality of southern Morocco.

In recent years Dakhla has become a destination of choice for travellers seeking authenticity and unspoilt nature: surfing, sport fishing, desert excursions and relaxation by the lagoon. A land where the desert meets the ocean, and where every day often ends facing an unforgettable sunset.
